Why Are Air Bubbles Coming From My Pool Return Jets?
A few bubbles appear in the pool after the pump starts. Then they keep coming. You may also notice the pump basket never fills completely, water movement feels weaker, or the pump needs help before it will prime. Air bubbles at the return jets usually mean air is entering the circulation system somewhere before the pump. That matters because a pool pump is designed to move water, not a mixture of water and air.
Start with the pool water level
An Ahwatukee pool can lose a noticeable amount of water during a hot, dry week. If the level falls below the middle of the skimmer opening, the skimmer may begin pulling air. The effect is often worse when the pump runs at a higher speed or when water moves away from the skimmer during swimming.
Restore the water to its normal level and watch the skimmer while the pump operates. A stuck skimmer weir can create a similar problem by restricting the flow of water into the basket. Leaves and debris packed around the basket may also starve the pump. Turn the equipment off before reaching into a skimmer or pump basket.
If the bubbles disappear after the water is raised, continue watching the level over the next several days. Rapid loss may point to more than ordinary evaporation, particularly when wet soil, cracked fittings, or an unusual need for refilling appears at the same time.
The pump lid and fittings deserve a look
A loose pump lid, dirty sealing surface, worn lid ring, or drain plug that no longer seals can admit air without releasing much water. That makes a suction leak confusing. The equipment pad may remain dry even while the clear pump lid shows a stream of bubbles.
Do not keep tightening a plastic lid with tools. Excess force can damage it. The seal should be clean, correctly seated, and suitable for the pump. If bubbles return soon after the basket has been cleaned and the lid replaced, the cause may be elsewhere in the suction plumbing.
Persistent air may indicate a plumbing leak
Valves, pipe joints, and fittings between the pool and pump can draw air through a small opening. A cracked skimmer line or damaged fitting underground is less common, but it needs professional testing. A pump that repeatedly loses prime after shutdown provides another clue.
Running the equipment with poor water flow can increase heat and wear. Shut the pump down if it cannot establish steady circulation, begins making harsh sounds, or runs dry. Guessing with sealants around several fittings may hide the symptom without locating the failed connection.
